The Royal Tay Yacht Club is celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year and the “Blue Riband” sailing event is the 125 Challenge Days. The first of these days is Saturday 15th May followed by days in June (13th) and August (28th). There will be 3 races each day and the courses/format will change for each race.
As well as the usual handicap classes, there will be a separate class for the less experienced racers, to encourage everyone to take part. This class will be known as the “Silver Class” and each participant will be awarded a personal handicap, adjusted for each race. This is designed to encourage cadets and novices to participate in, perhaps, their first event. Catering will be available from 10am on the beach and will include the usual bacon rolls etc and also lunch, after Race 1. The Club will also be serving High Teas in the evening.

Comment:-
This Series of 9 races will be for the 125 Challenge Trophy, the ultimate sailing award for the year.
There will be the usual P.Y. Handicap Classes for Dinghies, Squibs and Keel Boats. Five or more boats will constitute a class. Participants can expect a varied programme of races.
There will also be a separate Personal Handicap class.
The Annual LTSC regatta was held at the weekend (20/21 Sept) with an entry of 52 boats. The biggest class were the RS 200's with 14 boats, including 2 from the home club. There was also a large mixed handicap fleet and a slow handicap fleet for the junior sailors.
The wind on Saturday was out of the South West which made it tricky to get a decent first beat off the club line, which led to more than a few collisions, espcially in the larger handicap class. Unfortunately the wind was also a bit fickle making conditions hard for the sailors, and the race officer!, but two races were completed before retiring to the new clubhouse for some grub and liquid refreshments.
Sunday dawned looking like a day to a) stay in bed, b)read the paper, or c) play football, and untill 11am, most of the fleet were doing one of these!, however out of nowhere a fresh to strong westerly blew up and the cobwebs were blown away, with a few people taking a wee swim.
Sailors then retired for a well deserved lunch, before belatedly getting out for the final race, which was held in a nice 8 knots from the west.

We now have a online weather station and webcam with updates every 15 mins. This is still somewhat experimental but are available at http://www.lochtummelsc.org/weather/ and http://www.lochtummelsc.org/webcam/ and via the menus or QuickLinks on the forntpage
Feedback is welcome via the Contact LTSC menu option.
The setup for those interested is via a WH1080 touch screen weather station. This has the head unit (wind speed, temperature etc) and wireless connection to a LCD display panel. This allows the OOD to see the conditions during the race. From that there is a small single board computer that takes the data via USB and creates web pages. These then get uploaded via a 3G USB Dongle attached to a small router to the main club website. The update is slow so right now its 5 mins for the webcam and 15 for the weather. When you are looking at the website you are in fact seeing a copy so of the network link fails it will have the last version still showing.

As you may be aware the Scottish oppies are taking off thanks to the great work Alec Logan has put in. The Nationals are in Largs this year with the a fab regatta fleet - 1 coach to 5 boats with racing and emphasis on fun - BBQ on Cumbrae!!Optimists are quite tricky to get a hold of at the moment so please see Alec's news below
Aec Logan writes:
I have located a cache of 18 new Oppies still in the box, still at the 2008 price - in this case (Porter Marine/Far East - see http://www.porters.org.uk/optimist.htm
(Hyde sail, good spars and foils, bailer, Praddle, Little Hawk, top and bottom cover, trolley) for £1640. No discount for group purchase as these boats are very sellable and will be snapped up as Oppie parents begin to see that 2009 prices will be more expensive. The second hand value of these boats will also hold up very well. This is a great buy so if you are interested please contact Porters directly.CheersAngie
Now the article title has got your attention, what is it all about?
The club would like to thank and truly show its appreciation to the "J K Cairncross Trust" who have gifted the club funding to purchase a new rescue boat. Jimmie Carincross was one of two brothers who established the Perth jewllers renowned for their Tay pearl items.
Sailing was one of his passions and took his last sail round the island at Loch Tummel with club member Ian McLaren. Confirming as we all suspect the "small world" saying, Denise and I were neighbors of his until we moved to Germany.
At the request of the trust the boat will be named "The Jimmie".
Final research and quotes are ongoing but the intention is a semi-rigid inflatable package somewhere between the current "big and wee" ribs we have today (attached picture as a sample only). With the rapid growth in membership this new addition to the clubs flotilla is more than welcome

PROGRAMME: Broadly speaking, the contractors programme is being maintained, albeit that circumstances and conditions have caused some deviation. Today, the loch is high by normal standards but thankfully it is within its banks, hopefully to remain there although weather is forecast to deteriorate later this week and continue into next week.
Work has started!! Read more about the initial groundworks and changes to the old clubhouse. After confirming the grant funding from SportScotland, members and other trusts, LTSC was able to complete a tender process and appoint a contractor for the work, just prior to Xmas.
SportsScotland today announced the award of a grant of £97,525 to LTSC in support of its plans to create extended changing rooms along with enhanced club house facilities.
Quote "To purchase two existing chalets into male and female changing rooms, training room, small kitchen extension to clubroom and provision of accessible ramp. The conversion will help the club expand its activities and continue its excellent work with young people."
